The Alumni Association recently conducted a "Regional Seminar" at Joint Base Lewis-McChord on November 19, 2010. The topic of the seminar was "National Security Challenges for the Obama Administration." Over 80 alumni, I Corps officers, and other friends of the association attended the event.

MG Hugo gives his opening remarks and strategic perspective to kick off the seminar.
RADM Michael McDevitt, USN, Ret, former Commandant of the National War College and current Vice President and Director of the Center for Naval Analysis, kicked off the day with an assessment of the Security Challenges around the Pacific Rim.
This was followed by a presentation by Phillip Longman, a Senior Research Fellow at the New America Foundation who gave a stimulating presentation of the changes and challenges in world-wide demographics and their influences and effect on developing national security strategy.

COL David Maxwell of the National War College Faculty then briefed the group on the security challenges of the Korean Peninsula specifically addressing the succession issue in north Korea, the regional and global effect of a potential regime collapse and the transformation of the alliance on the peninsula.
The afternoon presentations were kicked off by Dr. Bud Cole of the National War College Faculty, who briefed China's strategic priorities and growing influence both in the regional and globally. Dr. Cynthia Watson of the the faculty then discussed China's political and economic interest in Latin America, and the strategic impact on the western hemisphere.

Dr. Audrey Kurth Cronin
The seminar was concluded by Dr. Audrey Kurth Cronin's presentation and discussion of "How Terrorism Ends." She gave a 45 minute presentation summarizing her extensive research on the genesis of terrorism and a discussion of how it ends.
MG Victor Hugo, USA, Ret, Alumni Association Chairman for Regional Seminars moderated the event adding his perspective in linking all of the topics together and focusing their importance.
The seminar was a resounding success generating much intellectual energy among the attendees and reconnecting the unique personnel and professional network of National War College alumni.
