CNA announced that Dr. Jeffrey A. Bader will the distinguished speaker at the CNA National Security Seminar (NSS) on Tuesday, 19 July, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Dr. Bader, who was Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for East Asian Affairs on the National Security Council from January 2009 to April 2011, will discuss the Obama Administration and East Asia.

You will need to enter Roosevelt Hall from either ends of the building, as the main steps are closed for repairs. Those with handicapped issues or requiring an elevator, recommend you enter the building through the tunnel doors by approaching the tunnel from the east end (side closest to the Marina/Anacostia River. Parking should be available as the students will be out of class. Be sure to have your ID and military sticker on your car to go through the main gate or enter the installation from the search gate. Please have two forms of ID (driver License and one other.) See you in the Rotunda

2011 NWC Writing Award Winners

For her Research Fellowship paper, "The Dhahran Airfield and Security Assistance: Shaping American Foreign Policy with Saudi Arabia, 1946-1996,” an NDU Foundation Writing Award was presented to Lt Col Tracy R. Szczepaniak, USAF. sponsoring faculty: Professor Mark Clodfelter, with assistance from Professors Harvey Rishikof, Eric Hammersen, Kamal Beyoghlow, and Mike Mazar.

2011 CJCS and SecDef Essay Contest Award Winners

Four students of the class of 2011 excelled in the recently completed CJCS and SecDef essay contests conducted among all 12 PME institutions.

Mr. Stephen Coonen won first place in the Chairman’s Essay Competition for his paper on overrating the Chinese threat;

COL Mark “Max” Maxwell won second place in the Chairman’s Essay Competition for his paper on targeted killing and the law;

Mr. David Greene won third place in the Chairman’s Article Competition for his paper on US strategy in Southeast Asia; and

Gen. Martin E. Dempsey (1996): Next CJCS

Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey (1996), for reappointment to the rank of general and for assignment as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  Dempsey is currently serving as the chief of staff, U.S. Army, Washington, D.C.

We are pleased to announce that Ambassador Stephen Seche, U.S. Ambassador to Yemen 2007 to 2010, will be the distinguished speaker at the CNA National Security Seminar on Tuesday, 14 June, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Ambassador Seche will offer his personal views on "fixing" Yemen following the 5 June departure of President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
